Is there anyone out there who has had any success stories/treatments if this condition is diagnosied in a Pug? My wife and I are awaiting the results of a spinal-test on one of our pugs tomorrow morning and the Vet thinks it might be encephalitis and is giving us a less-than-hopeful prognosis if this is the case . . would appreciate any feedback . .

Hello: I have just taken a job in southern Spain and have promised my son that we will take his pug along. What recommendations are there for flying with pugs? I'd like to take him in the cabin with us but he can be rowdy. Are tranquilizers recommended? Will airlines allow us to carry the dog onboard? We have a carrier, but would prefer not to put him in the baggage hold where he could be harmed.
Thanks for your advice, RL Guy
E-Mail Randy with your advice/information if you know!! : mcrg@worldnet.att.net
A23. Hello Randy,
Nice to hear from you again, so you are off to Spain. Well I flew to France from the UK and I had star treatment I can tell you!! However, I travelled alone, but mom made sure everyone looked out for me by putting pictures and labels all over my travelling box creating great interest in me!! Generally if you are accompanying your Pug, and he/she is in a neat plastic travelling box (aircraft approved - we used a Skyline kennel made in the USA!!); your Pug should be able to travel on deck rather than in the hold, in one of the passageways or staff areas. You must check with your flight provider though as they all differ as to the amount of importance they attach to livestock! We used British Airways who are very tuned in and sympathetic to dogs on board! Safe journey et Bon Voyage!! (my french is improving!)

Q22. Old Age and Odour!!
Hello, I have a beautiful male pug. He is almost 11 years of age. (his birthday is April 30) Anyways, he really stinks. We bathe him, not overbathe him. But nothing seems to work. Is there something wrong? Is it possible he has cancer?
Sweet Pee
A22.
Hello Sweet Pee!! Well I am sorry to hear of you dear boy's problem. I sincerely hope your faithful friend is not poorly. One of the problems with old age in man and beast is odour!! Another thing is that pugs of any age can suffer with their (can I mention it mum!!) anal glands!! Some pugs need to have them emptied fairly frequently - they can become smelly if not attended to!! Perhaps you could pop him along to the vet for a check up to make sure all is well, and the vet will do the honours with the anal glands. (Some owners acquire the knack of emptying the glands themselves!!) Regards Milo

NOTE FROM THE BARKING ROOK:
I hope you have missed my friendly comments from the chimney pot. That is because I have been on a nice little jaunt to Kuala Lumpur and I'm very sorry to be back so soon! I have to tell you that my little barking tricks work just as well on Malaysian dogs as on you lot! I'm glad to see that they understand me perfectly. I'll send you pictures of two of my 'victims'.
In KL the big attraction is to fly between the twin towers. The best part of my trip by far. You hardly need a feather to keep warm over there and I'm missing the spicy titbits that gave me a good change of diet. You won't be surprised if I find some nice little nest over here!!
I see that there have been some changes down with you whilst I have been away. Milo you finally got to fly, I hope you enjoy your new life, I bet that ducks can't imitate pugs the way that I do! Will little Java be taking over the webpage or will you do it remotely with some new canards???

Yes I am learning to understand La Francais! And Yes! I am still WebMaster!! I have never had so much excitement in my life, since I got through the fence when I was 9 weeks old and went missing! Well, it was time to go and mum looked like changing her mind so I quick jumped in the box! I had a 'mansion' to travel in, mum made me up a lunch box, and a nice continental bed! I flew down to London, and stayed in an overnight hotel. It was very expensive, but I feel that mum was short-changed, as the accommodation was for a dog!! Yes I had to sit in a dog's bed, and stare through chain link fencing, fancy that ME of all Pugs!! Anyway the food was good, and in the morning I set off in another plane to France. Mum had put lots of labels on my apartment, and it got me a lot of attention, I can tell you. I was treated like the Prince I am. I behaved very well, and after going through customs, I met my new guardians. We were all well pleased, and they took me to Montpelier, where I paraded all round the city and caused such a stir. I can't remember, how many people stopped to greet me and stroke my lovely coat!
It took ages for me to miss my old Pug friends, but I did miss them a bit, but man must move on and conquer new ground. I am happy and well satisfied with the warmer climate! Perhaps one day, mum will come and visit me, and she told me she would never forget me. Hello to all at HobbyToys, I am well and good! And as for you Barking Rook, I am so well satisfied with life that not even you can irritate me, and yes perhaps I'll miss you a bit!
Au revoir, Milo (I now pronounce my name Me-lo, instead of My-lo).

Reply-to: tricomp@nothnbut.net Mail Gil, if you can give help on getting started showing Pugs!!
I am looking for a club to join in the St. Louis Missouri area. I have a black pug and interested in showing and breeding.
A20. Welcome Gil,
To the wonderful world of Pugs!! You will make many new friends once you start showing your Pug, and you are right; the first thing to do is to join a registered Pug Club, local to you, or a canine society where you can go with your pug to ringcraft classes. I hope you are able to find one close by, for this is where all the fun is! Your pug will learn to 'show' and 'be good' on the table, and generally enjoy strutting around! If you check out The Pug Dog Club of America, (see top of the page) they can tell you where your nearest club is. Pug Clubs can give you good guidance on training, showing, entering your pug etc., and breeding guide lines. We wish you every success!!

From: woodwa@sympatico.ca I HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT MY SISTER'S BLACK PUG, NIKKI, WHEN SHE GETS EXCITED SHE PASSES OUT. THE VET SUGGESTED IT WAS DUE TO HER ELONGATED PALATE? CAN THIS BE REMEDIED WITHOUT SURGERY? AND IS SHE EXPERIENCING ANY BRAIN DAMAGE FROM THIS LACK OF OXYGEN? PLEASE HELP. Wayne. A19. Hi, Well first, your vet should be able to give you a better understanding than my mum, but I will tell you this! Mum has had lots of pugs, but only one - (MY MUM!! Bunty) has ever fainted. She was bitten by a horse fly, raced back down the field to the house screeching. My mum was very worried, she ran out to see what the matter was, and Bunty just ran to her then keeled over. She was completely out for about a minute, then she came round as though nothing had happened! She was a youngster at the time, 5 months old. She has never fainted since. None of the rest of us have fainted ever, but we have heard of it sometimes, and it only seems to be younger pugs that do it, they seem to grow out of it. If Nikki is fainting, its nature's way of a safety valve, and if its not too prevalent, little harm should come to Nikki; but on the other hand, take precautions, as one doesn't really want one's pugs fainting! Keep her from becoming overheated in hot weather, and try to keep the excitement down. If Nikki is doing more than just passing out, i.e. convulsions? Having a fit? Then certainly seek more advice and diagnosis. Any comments from anyone else out there? Please mail! Regards Milo Question 19 - Milo gets smacked! Date: 05/06/97 12:21:46 GMT From: disegno@worldnet.att.net (Amy Gardiner) Reply-to: disegno@worldnet.att.net FAQ's are very amusing, but your response to pug fainting does not seem to convey the seriousness of that problem. As a pug enthusiast for thirty years, elongated pallets (the writer means palates - this from Milo) are serious & pugs do not grow out of the problem which will likely get worse. Surgery with a top vet is best before age 5. The pug should never wear a traditional collar - harness only - & if possible, the pug should be encouraged to learn to eat ice chips to reduce the swelling. It isn't a question of brain damage, it is a question of survival for a pug. Best regards. Milo responds: Thanks to Amy Gardiner for her response offering advice and help. Elongated palates are they hereditary? I hear nothing of them over here, is this something which is prevalent in some lines? Please mail, if anyone knows more? However,it is not the purpose of this page to put fear into people, to convey seriousness or give veterinary advice; if you read the response you will see from the first statement that the referral is back to the expert, the vet; Nikki's owners are responsible and have taken her to their vet, they need re-assurance from their vet, and we certainly don't want to give them nightmares or keep them awake all night!

From: BirdPug
To: Milo!!
Fruit flies like a banana - a message from the barking rook....
Hello Milo,
I was watching Java this weekend doing her best to stand on her head, now why would she do that? She was trying it on your foam mattress, you know the one I mean, the one YOU spend all day chewing into little pieces. Your humans looked very pleased with the big pile of grass mowings, if their eyesight wasn't so feeble they would have seen it was mostly your old bits of foam!! (Some of the bits are making a cosy lining for my nest though.....hah!!) Now about Java, every time she got herself balanced on her head the foam shifted and she fell over. I presume she was using the more intelligent end of the pug to observe the Hale-Bopp comet..would that be right?
Its not just you pugs who are confused by my barking you know, I was flying over towards Rhyl the other day and saw the fledgling human and gave him a good old bark. He thought one of you had escaped and spent ages looking all around for you..Caw!!! Caw!! I hear you are finally going to get to fly, I hope you enjoy the experience. Flying without flapping, that just has to be the best way to travel.
from the barking rook
A17. We have all seen the Hale Bopp Comet without standing on our heads! Last night (Good Friday) we had a power cut for three hours (all the holiday makers were well cheesed off I can tell you!!), so we all sat out on the patio in the dark, and there to the west we all watched the comet. Yes I am going to fly, it was always on the cards, and I know it will be soon, as mum keeps looking at me funny, and becoming sentimental. Now I'm grown up (9 months old!), a cavalier young man, I'm off to seek my fortune, and I'm to go to Provence, France, where I will be King of the Castle (or Prince designate until I am Crowned!). I will be sad to say goodbye to Java, my mum and all my aunts, but as you say, time flies like an arrow, and it is not long now. I have been measured and weighed, (mum said I shall have to stop eating so much!), and I am to have a new Pet Apartment to travel in!! The excitement about going, outweighs my sadness at leaving!! I believe I shall acquire a taste for duckling a l'orange!! Of course I shall still run my Web Site, after all my name is Webmaster (registered at the Kennel Club!!), and as for you BirdPug, try barking at me in Provence! Woof! Woof!!
Regards Milo (Update - we have another power cut tonight! AND miss the England/Mexico Match on TV!!)

I have 2 puggies. Phoebe is fawn and Yoshi is black. Phoebe is 5 and Yoshi is 6. When I had my babies spayed the vet recommended expanding the nostrils and I agreed. The puggies still snore but from what I understand breathe alot better than their puggie friends. I have had a continuing problem with Phoebe getting bladder "stones" which are deposits of calcium which accumulate in her bladder. She has had to have surgery to remove them...so sad but she's fine. We are in Florida USA and they shed like mad...not good for an allergic hubby but if I had to choose---hmmmm! My babies are wonderful little sweeties and I'm happy to find others who love them as well. Ta Ta.

Q14. Pug breeders in the San Diego, CA. area?
Date: 16/03/97 03:51:52
Reply-to: mdesaire@flash.net
Hi,
My wife's pug of 10 years was killed by the neighbors 2 big dogs after they had dug under their chain link fence to get into our back yard. I have put up a concrete retaining wall and a 6 foot redwood fence to prevent that from ever happening again. Now she is ready to get another pug puppy. Do you have a listing of pug breeders in the San Diego, CA. area?
M and R.
A14. Well, this is indeed an upsetting story. We hope that the 'neighbours' were dealt with in no uncertain fashion!! Mostly we mean the two-legged ones, who should be responsible for the dogs they own. In the UK, it is up to owners to keep their animals contained, rather then next door neighbours having to fence to keep them out! However, mum knows the feeling, we have put up a concrete wall to stop the cattle 'visiting'!. Hope you find the most scrumptious pug and good wishes from pugdom! Can anyone help with lists of CA breeders? Perhaps you could try the Pug Dog Club (PDCA), or the AKC for advice on registered breeders, or the Breeders Network etc., at the top of the page.

I live in Arizona, and our summers get very hot, my pug stays outside while I'm at work. I'm very concerned about his level of heat tolerance, if I put in a misting system, would that keep him cool enough? Also, what are the effects of such temperatures on pugs? I'm very worried about my little bughead!
Laurie
A13. All you Sun Seeking Hot Pugs, Mail Laurie with your experiences of coping with high temperatures!
Hi Laurie
Well here in the UK we are lucky if we ever work up a sweat! Its pretty cool here, even in the summer (all 2 days of it!!) Our weather is cr...p!! We don't know what its like to feel too hot, we always sleep on top of the fire! What about the Florida Pugs, how do you cope with the heat? A misting system sound pretty swizz and fun to me!! A good shelter that keeps cool in the sun, like a marble replica of the Taj mahal, maybe an Italian terrazzo tiled floor, a limpid pool to dangle one's toes in, a velvet bed, some nice puggie company, ahhh......I'm enjoying it already - you've talked me into it!!
Keep your cool.. regards Milo

Q11. Chloe, has been acting very strange
Date: 18/03/97 7:43:28PM
From: martha
My four month old pug, Chloe, has been acting very strange at night and I was wondering if anyone has ever seen a pug do this. I should back up a little and say that we also have Chloe's sister, Emma, and that Emma is with the breeder right now, getting fixed and getting a hernia operated on. This first time Chloe did this (which I will explain in a minute) was right after we took Emma to the breeder. We assumed Chloe was crying all night and avoiding any physical contact because she missed her sister. Emma has been away from Chloe now for a week and we assumed Chloe would be OK since she only cried the first night without her sister. She did it again last night, all of a sudden she became very nervous and jumpy and wouldn't come near us. She's been sleeping in bed with us since Emma is not around but last night she just sat up in bed, crying. Could she still be missing Emma and perhaps be mad at us because Emma's not around? My husband has seen his parents' dog act this way during a thunderstorm, is it just something some pugs do? What is the best way to console her so she'll go to sleep? We've tried leaving her alone, putting her in the room where she and Emma slept, taking her outside, etc. Could it have anything to do with teething? Should we try to give her a chew stick?
Thank you.
A11. Is Chloe Psychic? Is Emma unsettled too at the same time..who knows. When my mum was little, her sister fell off the wall bars at school and broke her arm. My mum was 3 yrs old and at home in the kitchen with her mum, and her mum suddenly said "Pammy has hurt herself, I know". She went straight off to the school, and she was right! its strange but true. We Pugs are not nervous as a rule, and we certainly don't hold grudges. But we are tuned in to those we love!

Its a shame about the allergy to animals. We dogs though, we love the human race and are the natural friend of mankind; we think you two-legged people animals are pretty fascinating, and love to spend all our time with you, and we do our best to please - even though for some reason we sometimes make people cross!! Q9. Re: The Cost of Pugs
Why do Pugs cost so much?
Subj: pugs cost Date: 13/03/97 4:17:52PM From: Brian A9. We're worth every Penny (err.. Cent!!) Do we cost a lot?? In the UK £350.00 is an average price for a well bred Kennel Club registered puppy, for many breeds. Is this expensive compared to other countries? Pugs are a minority breed in the UK. We are very small in numbers compared with for instance, Yorkshire Terriers, and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, some of the other breeds (English!) in the Toy Group. Most Pugs in the UK are bred by exhibitors, there is almost no 'pet' trade. We are not one of the popular breeds in the UK!! Neither are we very prolific; we often have small litters, or NONE at all! These are some of the reasons why we could be expensive,(AS IF!) We are not as expensive as we could be! Waiting lists are the order of the day because supply does not meet demand! Those that choose us are discerning! We are not commercially attractive to those that would want to churn out puppies - each of us are carefully nurtured little gems! Like good wine and olives - we are an acquired taste of those privileged to have educated taste buds!! regards Milo see also Q7 and Q12

Hello Milo of the UnLimited! Ha! Ha!
What a good weekend you have given me, I haven't laughed so much since next door's cat fell off the wall. Milo you were so much help with the wall building to-day. Your little paw prints are in the mortar [again], I saw you trying to take the brickies hammer. Your speedy friends Java, Jazz and Zip were so busy helping too. Tell Java that she will get a white nose if she sticks it in the cement bag. What is so funny is that I don't think you realise what all the work is for.....try reading "The bird man of Alcatraz" to find out. It used to be required reading in the rookery when I was young...for reasons that don't concern us here today. I don't hold out much hope of you learning to fly either, you have a drag factor the same as a bread bin and what are you going to flap? That tail is so curled, it hardly moves when you wag it and your ears are too small to flap, looks like you will need guile if you ever want to 'fly the nest'!!

Well as a rule we can't pass judgement on pug breeders, but perhaps S. Calif. breeders can you contact Mark? In the UK a pedigree (are there any other!! )pug, will cost around £300 - £500 sterling - is that approx 500 - 1000 US $?? I'm no good at sums, and mum doesn't know the current exchange rate! (Pugs are very upmarket in the UK and not too easily obtainable - often there are waiting lists!! Blacks are more difficult to come by). Are Pugs less expensive in the USA?? Dear Pugs UK,
So very glad to see all the information you have supplied for us pug owners.THANKS!!!! You have changed the areas around a bit, and I was just getting started on the old one. It was great! And I am sure that the new one will be also. (Mum! will you stop fiddling with the Page layout!!) I have a question, please help me if possible. What can I do concerning my pug and his shedding. We live in south Georgia, if that makes a difference. He doesn't spend alot of time outside in the weather, so whats the deal? I bathe him on a regular basis, he stays clean, but do not even know if there is a solution to this problem. I merely refuse to make him stay outside. So please come up with another solution. Will be looking for your reply.
Thanks, Becky
A6. Dear Becky's Pug
Glad to hear your mom won't put you out - they really are a pushover these moms!! Dogs will shed once a year no matter what, I myself shed twice a year, in spring I put on my splendid summer coat (I'm a lush (mum's word for me) apricot fawn); and in autumn, I put on my best winter woollies! I don't know much about Georgia, except what I saw, when mum had the TV tuned all day & night to the olympic games. If its steamy in Georgia, with not much fluctuation in temperature during the seasons, it may be that you will shed a little hair all year round, instead of going nearly bald, as I do every spring!!
Hey does anyone out there know of any remedies for this, perhaps homeopathic, or herbal ??
Anyone out there know what Pugs living in a balmier climate can do the stop their hair falling out!! Regards Milo the Webmaster 17 Feb 1997 07.46.pm.
Q5. Re: PUGS
Dear Milo Webmaster,
So its mister webmaster pug is it? Now you are becoming such a well known and celebrity pug, I've got a couple of more down to earth questions for you:
Number 1: On noses
Why is it that considering the significant lack of size of the pug nose, is it that you and your clan all poke your size challenged noses into everything?
Number 2: Paw prints
I have seen your prints on your webpage, but now I find them all round the garden in the nice smooth bits of cement that were done yesterday. Don't you know there is a limit to patience?
What a pathetic lot you look like from up here - I can bark but you can't fly!!
Signed,
Your nosey neighbor, THE BARKING ROOK
ps. my nose is useful and longer!

Your nose is only useful to someone who eats worms! As for my paw prints, let them be set in stone! Proof of my fame! PS next time close your gate and your 'bark' is a poor imitation of mine!

Q4. Re: PUGS
Date: 17/02/97 9:54:51PM
Hi again Milo the Webmaster, I got your message and find it interesting that black pugs are not common in the UK either. I thought they would be more common since they originated from Europe before coming to America.
I do have a question I hope you can answer. My ten year old pug T'Pril has gotten very mean as she has gets older and will viciously attack Kira if they are enclosed in any kind of space, large or small, and someone other than myself walks into that space. She can not be trusted around other strange animals. She still is loveable to all humans and would not hurt anyone.
If you have any suggestions I would appreciate hearing them.
Thanks,
Kira's mom Marianne
A4. Dear Kira's mom Marianne
As T'Pril has passed into old age, it may be that she has aches and pains that come with age, which may make her 'cantankerous'! Also it could be that her sight is also not as good, (I know my mum's wearing glasses sometimes now, I think it's all that time she spends on the computer, instead of studying ME!!); sight does deteriorate with ageing, and T'Pril may not see who's coming in so she springs to the defence! She seems OK if she knows you are around?
Any Pug Pickers out there have experience of this? Some folks say we can get jealous and possessive in our old age - is this so? I don't know as I am just an easy going slip of a lad!! (8 months old).

A1. Dear Pug de Nicole
Did you see the above message on Pugs UK! This is very worrying, I hope this doesn't become a fashion in Pugs! I am quite proud of my flat nostrils, yes I do snuffle alot, but no dog's perfect! My missus rather likes my comforting snoring sounds. Then again I am not the doctor, if you suffer from sinus it may need treatment. However, I have never heard of us Pugs needing our nostrils enlarged! The cheek of it! What do they think we are! Pigs?? Have any other pug pickers out there heard of this? It certainly isn't a Frequently Asked Question!! All I can advise, is that if you rumble that Nicole is sweetly trying to coerce you into the car, be suspicious and run like Hell! (I always hide in the airing cupboard when its nail cutting time). Regards Milo the Webmaster 12 Feb 1997
